In her Peaceful Meditations, Alexandra Villard de Borchgrave aims to bring a measure of peace and tranquility to minds troubled by physical or mental suffering. Well-chosen classical music blends with her own gentle recitation of nine poems published in her Trilogy (Glitterati, Inc.); and the result — to borrow from Shakespeare’s The Tempest – is “sounds and sweet airs that give delight and hurt not.” Lines like, “A sea of tranquility/lies deep and still/in the core/of the human soul” is something Wordsworth could have written on a good day. But such lines as “To see humility in/ a grain of sand/Resides at/the crux of the cause,” in the same poem (A Sea of Tranquility) require more careful thought. The last verses of “Spirit” reference “the divine” and that is the closest we get to any reference to a deity, yet Villard de Borchgrave’s work is strongly spiritual as well as being full of uplift. The verses may be non-denominational but the soaring music of Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, written to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi in 1791, provides another kind of emphasis, and you take your choice. Visually (this is a video, after all) the delicately animated artworks of birds and flowers from the Freer|Sackler enhance the serenity of this remarkable effort. ______ Light of Healing Hope: Peaceful Meditations will inspire and uplift viewers with its messages of hope, peace, and faith, encouraging a positive attitude in bad times as well as good. The beautiful 16th and 17th century Asian artwork from the Freer|Sackler (Smithsonian Institution) comes alive to classical music, including moving works by Handel, Mozart, and Mahler, set to the artistry of Alexandra Villard de Borchgrave’s readings of her inspirational poems. ___
